Obituary for Betty Lou Scofield
Betty Lou (Carroll) Scofield, 80, of Stratford, beloved wife of Ralph Scofield, died peacefully on October 30 at Yale New Haven Hospital. Born in Bridgeport on December 2, 1933, Betty was the daughter of James L. Carroll and Elizabeth Louise (Wood) Carroll. The third of five children, she was predeceased by her beloved siblings, Evelyn, Roy, John (Jack), and Pat Carroll. She grew up in Bridgeport, attended the local parochial schools and graduated from Harding High School in 1951. Betty graduated in 1955 from what is now Southern Connecticut State University with a B.S. in Elementary Education. Upon receiving her degree, she taught first and fifth grades in the Bridgeport Public Schools. In 1960, she married the love of her life, Ralph F. Scofield. Betty and Ralph, who both lived at the Yellow Mill Village in Bridgeport, had met through mutual friends. When Betty and Ralph set up their home in Stratford and began raising their family in 1961, Betty retired from teaching. She was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker who placed a great value on education and even in retirement from teaching imparted many lessons to her children and grandchildren. As a couple, Betty and Ralph were inseparable best friends. They shared a selfless devotion to their children and grandchildren. Betty, once their children were in school, assumed part-time duties as a paralegal to Ralph, a trial attorney who also had an active real estate practice. This additional facet of their partnership only brought them closer together. She continued this work well into her 70’s. Betty was a devout Catholic who attended Mass every Sunday. Betty was a great and loyal friend with a sharp sense of humor and a generous heart. Until her fall in late August, she remained extremely active, and was the “ringleader” of a close group of ladies who enjoyed lunch every Friday. A lifelong avid reader, she ran an informal lending library for her friends, family, and neighbors. She had a nimble mind and was a keen observer of politics. But most of all, Betty lived for family. She reveled in the milestones and achievements of her children, their spouses, and her grandchildren. She loved hosting holiday meals; her stuffing, brownies, and cherry cakes were legendary. Betty delighted in bargain hunting with her granddaughter Emily, learning about computers from her grandson Charlie, exchanging jokes with her grandson William, and, in recent years, rekindling her teaching instincts by sharing her love of reading and writing with her youngest grandchild, Kyleigh. In addition to her husband Ralph, she is survived by her sons Edward Scofield of Stratford (and his wife Judith), Robert Scofield of Stratford, and Thomas Scofield of Seymour (and his wife Lauren). She leaves behind her four beloved grandchildren, Emily, Charlie, William, and Kyleigh, who will always carry with them the love of their “Granny.” She is also survived by many nieces and nephews including her beloved Catherine Pramuka of Newtown. Friends are invited to attend her Funeral Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. by meeting DIRECTLY at St. Mark’s Church, 500 Wigwam Lane, Stratford, CT. Interment will follow in Putney Cemetery, Stratford, Ct. Friends may visit with the family Friday evening (TODAY) from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the William. R. McDonald Funeral Home, 2591 Main St., Stratford, CT. For additional information or to share remembrances and condolences, visit www.wrmcdonaldfuneralhome.com.
