Obituary for Edna Gabriele
GABRIELE - Edna (Chandler) Gabriele, age 97, of Milford and previously of Stratford, CT., died peacefully Thursday, April 4, 2013 in the Lord Chamberlain Nursing Facility. Mrs. Gabriele was born December 13, 1915 in Jamestown, New York, daughter of the late Charles and Ruth (Houghtaling) Chandler, and had been a long time area resident. Edna worked as a bookkeeper at Arthur's in Bridgeport, CT prior to moving to St. Petersburg, Florida where she worked for many years in retail. She returned to CT to retire and settle with family. She was a long time member and volunteer of the Baldwin Center of Stratford where she was honored with the 2006 Volunteer of the Year award. She was an avid gardener, loved animals and baseball. Her love of life and family was the driving force behind her 97 years. One of her last quotes was 'You can't keep an old, old lady down!'  And her last request to her brother-in-law Louis was for a cold beer. Theses are the things that made Edna so special to her family. Survivors include her sister, Barbara Tompkins and her husband Louis of Milford; nephews Douglas(Lorraine) Brown, Todd (Cheryl) Tompkins, Tyler (Kendra) Tompkins; neices Kristen (Noel) Cocca, Lisa (Thomas) Mantini and fifteen great neices and nephews.  She was predeceased by two sisters, Lucile Winiger and Beatrice (Bill) Jackson and a nephew N. John Brown. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of the Lord Chamberlain Nursing Facility for the wonderful care they gave to Edna over the past year. Friends are invited to attend a Funeral Service officiated by the Reverend Koonae A. Lee, on Monday, April 8, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in The Stratford United Methodist Church, 2600 Main Street, Stratford. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Shelton. Friends may visit with the family before service time from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the William R.
