Obituary for Gladys (Matos) Aviles
Gladys (Matos) Aviles, age 85, of Stratford, previously of Bridgeport, passed away Friday, January 1, 2021, at Bridgeport Hospital, due to complications from COVID-19, and other ailments, with her beloved daughter, Sandy, at her side.
Gladys was born June 25, 1935, in Puerto Rico, daughter of the late Pedro and Julia (Rios) Matos and had been a longtime area resident.
She came to Connecticut at the age of 15, with her parents and siblings. She was a single mother of four children, instilling in them respect, strength and unconditional love. She enjoyed being with her family more than anything else. She lived a very quiet, humble life enduring many losses, but can now rest in peace.
Survivors include her three daughters, Sandra Aviles, Gladys Aviles, and Damaris Cabrera; a sister, two brothers, four grandsons, one granddaughter, and six great-grandchildren. In addition, a special companion, a special sister-in-law and a special niece, along with many relatives in Puerto Rico.
She was predeceased by three children whom she can care for once again.
Due to COVID-19 health concerns, all services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to: BRIDGEPORT HOSPITAL, COVID UNIT, EAST TOWER 8, 267 Grant Street, Bridgeport, CT 06610.
A very special thanks to the incredibly dedicated, compassionate, and kind, nurses and doctors at East Tower 8, who risk their lives daily, working long extended hours while jeopardizing their own health, selflessly caring for all those affected by this horrible pandemic. PLEASE DONATE (EVEN A NOMINAL AMOUNT) FOR PPE EQUIPMENT, VACCINES AND ADDITIONAL RESEARCH. Thank you VERY much.
