Obituary for Helen E. Burke
Helen Elizabeth Burke, née Brady, of the Lordship section of Stratford, beloved wife of the late Charles Edward Burke, passed away Friday, March 31, 2017 in Bridgeport Hospital. Mrs. Burke was the daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Frank J. Brady of Bridgeport and had been a longtime Stratford resident.
She received her BA degree from Albertus Magnus College and did her graduate work in the Department of Classics at Fordham University. Mrs. Burke taught French and Latin at St. Mary's Catholic High School in New Haven and Latin and English at Stratford High School. She was also a Resource Specialist and part-time instructor in English and English as a Second Language at Housatonic Community College.
She is survived by her children: Kathleen Burke Shemeley (William) of New Milford; Michael P. (Cheryl) of Jupiter, Florida; Kevin T. (Carrie) of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Brien J. of Stratford; Charles G. of La Habra, California; Paul C. of Vero Beach, Florida; and Carol Burke Kowal (Richard) of Milford. Survivors also include fourteen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and her sister, Dr. Ruth M. Brady of Hudson, Florida.
Mrs. Burke was predeceased by her brother, Professor Peter T. Brady who taught at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.
Friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Father Nicholas Pavia on Friday, April 7, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. by meeting directly in Our Lady of Peace Church, 651 Stratford Road. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Trumbull. There will be no calling hours.
