Obituary for James F. Papp
James F. Papp, age 95, of Stratford, CT, passed away peacefully at Lord Chamberlain Nursing Facility in Stratford on May 20, 2022. James was born January 18, 1927 in Bridgeport CT.
James was a longtime resident of Stratford, and WW II U.S. Army veteran. He joined the Army in 1945, went through basic training, but before being deployed, the war ended. When the Army went to discharge him, he transferred to the newly formed Army Air Corp and shipped to post-war Germany. There, he went to radio training school at a U.S. Army airfield in Nelligen Kaserne, Germany, and was assigned to Occupation Duty with the 582nd Signal Air Warning Battalion patrolling the Berlin Air Corridor. James was also with the 601st Tactical Control Squadron, Aircraft Control Warning Squadron. Originally, the 601 TCS and its detachments provided early warning radar and direction-finding network to support tactical operations of USAFE and to provide navigational aid to friendly aircraft. Jim made rank of Sargent, before being discharged from the Army Air Corp 1948. He retired from Preferred Tool in Stratford as a tool and die maker in 1988.
He is predeceased by his wife Margaret (Donnley) Papp of Stratford; stepsons, James and John Sullivan; sisters, Elizabeth Mercier of Pompano Beach Fl, Marion LaPrade of Bridgeport CT, and Helen Pelatowski of Southington CT and two brothers Louis Papp and John S. Papp of Florida.
James is survived by a brother Albert Papp of Stamford; granddaughters, Rebecca Sullivan from Australia and Katherine Warren from Wallingford CT; daughter-in-law Susan Sullivan; nephew Robert Papp and his wife Linda Papp, as well as additional nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews and life-long friend Joyce Tulliano.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends at Lord Chamberlain.
Friends and family are invited to attend a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, May, 27, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Peace Church, 651 Stratford Rd., Stratford, CT 06615. Friends may visit with the family Friday before Mass time from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the William R. McDonald Funeral Home, 2591 Main St., Stratford, CT 06615. Entombment with Military Honors will follow in St. Michael’s Garden Mausoleum, Stratford, CT.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the Disabled American Veterans.
