Obituary for Janice Rose (Gould) Fortune
Janice Rose (Gould) Fortune, age 93 of Stratford, beloved wife of the late William Fortune, died peacefully Monday, February 22, 2021 in the Jewish Home for the Elderly, Bridgeport. Mrs. Fortune was born November 12, 1927 in Park City Hospital in Bridgeport, daughter of Morris and Esther (Shelinsky) Gould of Fairfield.
Janice was a graduate of Stratford High School, class of 1945 and went on to study nursing at Mary Fletcher Hospital in Burlington, Vermont, where she received her nursing diploma in 1949. Janice met her future husband, Bill, while a nursing student there. Returning to Bridgeport upon graduation, she and Bill were married at St. James Church in Stratford, and she began her employment at the Bridgeport Hospital, later becoming head nurse of the recovery room. Many remember her service there.
When Janice and Bill moved to Cocoa Beach, Florida, Janice worked at the Cape Canaveral Hospital and later volunteered there. She participated in book club groups at the local library, and on many occasions led discussions on favorite books and topics of interest. Janice and Bill hosted many family reunions and gatherings of their Costa del Sol friends at their lovely home on Banana River Boulevard. Janice loved cats and her favorites were Sam, Tutt, and Nefertiti, who enjoyed all of the out-of-town visitors. Classic clown paintings and New England country scenes adorned the walls of their condo.
She is survived by her sister Barbara Minalga of Bridgeport; brother Alan Gould and his wife Patricia of Wilton; nephews William Minalga and wife Lynne of Shelton and Robert Minalga and wife Annabelle of Seymour; nieces Jennifer Cippoletti and husband Michael of Darien and Kristie Lucifora and husband Angelo of Trumbull; and sister-in-law Patricia Boudreau of Burlington, Vermont. Janice is also survived by several grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by brother-in-law William Minalga Sr; niece Shari Rollo and nephew Todd Minalga.
Due to Covid health concerns, a memorial service and burial in Union Cemetery, Stratford will be private.
