Obituary for Jessica Melendez
Jessica Melendez, age 67, of Stratford, previously of New York, passed away on Wednesday, October 5, 2022, in the Shady Knoll Health Center (Seymour, CT). Jessica was born January 24, 1955, in New York City, daughter of Angela Santiago, and was a lifelong New York resident, before her recent move to Stratford, CT., to be closer to her grandchildren.
Some of Jessica’s favorite hobbies were sewing (she was the first person her family went to with a pair of ripped pants), listening to music and dancing (salsa and merengue, mostly), and spending time with her grandchildren -- whether simply playing a board game with them or putting together 250-piece puzzles. In her spare time, Jessica also loved to keep her mind sharp with Sudoku! “It will keep my brain working,” she’d say. Jessica was also never known to turn down a good movie. She loved going out to the movie theatre or even stay at home and watching the Avengers movies with her family. And of course, you can’t watch a movie without candy – Jessica had a constant sweet tooth, and even had a drawer full of candy in her room.
Jessica is survived by her mother, Angela; her two sons, Jason and Rafael Martinez; her daughter-in-law, Maria; her four grandchildren, Jordan, Joshua, Sebastian, and Miranda; three siblings, Maryvel, Alejandrina, and Jose; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Jessica was predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Raquel, and her sister, Ivette.
The family would like to thank Jessica’s health care aide, Mable, for her compassionate and professional care.
Friends are invited to attend a celebration of Jessica’s life officiated by Deacon John Piatak on Monday, October 10, 2022, at 7:00 p.m. in the William R. McDonald Funeral Home, 2591 Main St., Stratford.
Friends may visit with her family before service time from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
