Serving Our Community Since 1951He served as a Technical Sgt. in the Army Air Corp during World War II, and flew 65 missions as a radio operator. He received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Catholic University in Washington D.C. and his M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Bridgeport. He worked at Dictaphone for 27 years as a Supervisor of Manufacturing Engineering. He was the main engineer in the development of the modern version of the Dictaphone and was known as "Mr. Dictaphone." He also was a member in the Industrial Golf League. His love for golf continued throughout his life, highlighted by achieving the amazing feat of shooting his age at 90 and two holes in one.
After he retired from Dictaphone, he became an Associate Professor at Norwalk Technical College for several years. He continued his passion for teaching at Stratford High School as a substitute math teacher. In addition, he was a lector at Our Lady of Peace Church where he taught CCD and RCIA. He was an avid reader, writer, philosopher, inventor, teacher, orator, sports enthusiast, chess master, ballroom dancer, theater lover, and a student of Shakespeare—a true Renaissance man. "There's a divinity that shapes our ends, Rough—hew them how we will," was his favorite Shakespearean quote. His genuine love of people and life, sense of humor and optimism will live in our hearts forever.
He is predeceased by his sisters Ann Markus and Dorothy Baldino, brothers Joseph, George, and Teddy, his first wife Ruth Kostelnik, and grandson Justin Petagine.
He is survived by Helen Lubas his sister from St. Augustine, Florida and his four loving children; Nancy Addorisio and her husband Michael of Killingworth, Mark Lubas of Bridgeport, James Lubas and his wife Lynn of Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, Kathryn Petagine and her husband Gary of Dover Plains, New York. Seven cherished grandchildren: Dr. Michelle Gora and her husband Matthew, Jason Petagine and his wife Tiffany, Jared Addorisio and his wife Caitlin, James Addorisio and his wife Tina, Daniel Lubas, Jonathan Addorisio and David Petagine. Nine adored great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Hospice for their loving care they provided for John.
Friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Father Nicholas Pavia on Friday, May 12, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. by meeting directly in Our Lady of Peace Church, 651 Stratford Road, Lordship. Interment with full military honors will follow in Saint Michael's Cemetery. Friends may visit with his family from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday in the William R. McDonald Funeral Home, 2591 Main St., Stratford.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Our Lady of Peace Sanctuary Fund, 230 Park Blvd, Stratford, CT 06615.
