Obituary for John Thomas Shillea
SHILLEA - John Thomas Shillea, age 94, of Stratford, beloved husband of the late Adeline (Piazza) Shillea, passed away Monday, January 5, 2015 in the Lord Chamberlain Nursing Facility. Mr. Shillea was born September 29, 1920 in Olyphant, Pennsylvania, son of the late Matteo and Sebastiana (Scarpelli) Shillea and had been a long time area resident. John retired from Norwalk State Technical College in 1988 and served his country in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He continued to serve his community as a volunteer at Bridgeport Hospital for 16 years and at the Baldwin Center for 11 years. In addition, he was proud to serve as an advisor to Junior Achievement, was a past President of the Bridgeport Safety Council, past member of the Stratford Lions Club, past Board Member of Stratford’s Sterling House and the YMCA. John used to be an actor in community theaters such as the Laurel Players in Shelton. When not going for a hotdog with his dearest friend, Bill Mezick, John spent his final years selflessly caring for one of the many dogs that he had throughout his lifetime. Survivors include his son-in-law and caretaker, Charles Jeffryes of Stratford and his nephew Thomas (Santa) Shillea, of Bethlehem, PA as well as many wonderful nieces. He was also predeceased by a son, Richard Shillea; three sisters Natalie Shillea, Mary Benninato and Lucy Cunningham and three brothers Steven Shillea, Sylvester Shillea and Joseph Shillea.
