Obituary for Joseph S. Buckmir
Joseph Buckmir, age 93, of Stratford, CT, sadly passed away on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, from complications of the Corona virus. He was the devoted husband of the late Bernice Bray Buckmir for 61 years. He was born in Bridgeport, CT on June 8th, 1928, the son of Matilda Tolj Buckmir. He was one of eleven children and was especially close to his brothers Mike and George and sisters Rose and Anne.
Joe worked at Moore Special Tool while attending Harding High School. After graduation, he proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, and served until he was honorably discharged in 1948. He then returned to work at Moore Special Tool for 42 years.
A kind and generous man, Joe was passionate about all that he did, including walking 6 miles a day for many years, and he loved dining well. He was a devout Catholic volunteering at St. Charles Church in Bridgeport in many capacities. He was a math whiz, and upon retiring, volunteered as a tutor for many students at various schools in the Diocese of Bridgeport. He also rang the donation bell for the Salvation Army during many cold winter Christmas seasons.
Joe was a proud grandfather who loved to watch his grandsons play sports, and he didn’t miss a game. He was an avid Mets, Jets, and UConn Basketball fan, and he loved the NCAA March Madness Tournament. Family, faith, giving back, and to see his children and grandchildren have the opportunities to succeed in life were his key passions.
Survivors include his devoted son, Wayne Bray Buckmir and his wife Karen of Orange, grandsons Wayne Jr. and Trent; his loving daughter, Wendy Buckmir Kovacs and her partner Michael Rapuano, grandsons Dylan and Evan Kovacs.
We send our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the wonderful nurses and med techs that cared for our dad, with respect and love, at Bridgeport Hospital, and also to the nurses and staff of the Stratford VNA for their amazing dedication and care.
Family and friends are in invited to attend a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Reverend Russell Augustine, on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. by meeting directly in St. Mark Church, 500 Wigwam Lane, Stratford, CT 06614. Military Honors will follow directly after Mass. Interment will be private. Friends may greet the family on Friday, May 13, 2022 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the William R. McDonald Funeral Home, 2591 Main St, Stratford, CT 06615. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army or to the Bridgeport Rescue Mission.
