Obituary for Joseph Wanas
Joseph Wanas of Stratford, age 95, beloved husband of 66 years to the late Dorothy (Martin) Wanas, entered peacefully into eternal rest on Friday, April 29, 2022 at his home. Joseph, the eleventh of thirteen children, was born September 26, 1926 in Dickson City, Pennsylvania to the late Michael Wanas, Sr. and Catherine (Okolovitch) Wanas.
While still in school, Joseph apprenticed as a candymaker and tended a soda fountain, which many locals happily frequented to taste his creations. Throughout his life, Joe was noted for his smoked kielbasa, potato pancakes, and peanut brittle.
After high school Joseph served in the United States Army before moving to Bridgeport. A talent for design and measurements secured him employment with the WarnaCo Group as a pattern grader and supervisor, a position from which he retired after 44 years with the company. It was at Warnaco that he met his wife Dorothy, whom he married in 1949.
Joseph enjoyed bowling and was a member of several leagues. After his retirement, he became an avid golfer and one of the original members of the Oronoque Country Club Clowns. Joseph kept an impeccable yard, his green thumb evident in his gardens and lawn. Joseph’s favorite sports teams were the Philadelphia Phillies, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the UConn Women’s Basketball team. Jigsaw puzzles were a favorite pastime, along with Jeopardy and old movies.
Joseph was well liked. His gentlemanly manner and wise counsel were appreciated by his family, neighbors, and many friends. Joseph is survived by his two daughters, Kathy Wanas of Stratford and Susan Wanas of New Haven; one brother, Alexander Wanas of Mayfield, Pennsylvania, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Joseph was predeceased by brothers William, John, Walter, Paul, and Michael; and sisters Anna Roman, Mary Kotch, Helen Shurminsky, Julie Bakos, Antonia Raguskas, and Olga Magyar.
Funeral visitation will be held at William McDonald Funeral Home at 2591 Main Street, Stratford, Connecticut from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday, May 6, 2022. Interment will follow at Union Cemetery, 23 Temple Court, Stratford. Family and friends are invited to join together for a repast at Knapp’s Landing, 520 Sniffens Lane in Stratford after the interment.
