Obituary for Lawrence C. Burns Sr.
CWO 4 Lawrence C. Burns, Sr. US Navy Retired, age 93, of Stratford, CT and formerly of Bradenton, FL and Lubec, ME, passed away Friday, January 9, 2015 in the Connecticut Hospice, Branford. Born on February 24, 1921, he was the son of the late Wilfred E. and Claire (Wallace) Burns. He is predeceased by his wife Anna Marie; son Lawrence, Jr.; infant sons Richard E. and Ronald Joseph; sisters Winifred (Cecelia), Winifred (Dolly) Sneddon and Lois Louise. He was also predeceased by his longtime companion Violet Easterly of Hanover, MD. He is survived by his son Robert E. and daughter-in-law Camille Burns of Stratford, CT; six grandchildren Tracy Sierdy of Torrington, CT, Nichol Pomales of Stratford, CT, Amanda Locke of Bangor, ME, Kerry-Ann Brown of Lubec, ME; twins Timothy and Douglas Burns, both of Bangor, ME; seven great-grandchildren Evan and Aidan Sierdy of Torrington, CT, Peyton and Kendall Brown of Lubec, ME, Jasmine and Kiara Locke of Bangor, ME and Mia Camille Pomales of Stratford, CT. Upon graduation from Lubec High School in 1940, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, intent on a thirty-year career. He advanced rapidly to Chief Petty Officer and in February of 1951 was selected for promotion to Warrant Officer. A veteran of all theaters of operation during WWII, he also served in the Korean Conflict, the Cold War and the Vietnam War. Benefiting from his attendance at several naval schools and completion of several correspondence courses, he distinguished himself by the following highlights of his career: Top-Secret Courier for the Commander of the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean, Officer in Charge of Navy Supply School in Newport, RI, Ambassador of Good Will throughout the Mediterranean and Supply Officer, Navy Submarine School, Groton, CT. Retiring in 1970 with the rank of CWO-4, he remained active in military affairs as a member of the Military Officers Assoc. of America, VFW, American Legion, Naval Institute and a founding member of the U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington, DC. A longtime seafarer since the early age of 8, his favorite hobby was writing articles of maritime interests. For a number of years, he was a contributor to the “Down East” Newspaper, The “Quoddy Tides.” A devout Catholic, he also spent several years as a lector at St. Ambrose Church in Bridgeport, CT, Holy Name Church in Stratford, CT and Holy Cross Church in Palmetto, FL. Friends are invited to attend Mr. Burn’s Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, January 16, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. by meeting directly at Holy Name Church, Stratford, CT. Interment with full military honors will follow in Lakeview Cemetery, Bridgeport, CT. Per Mr. Burn’s request, there will be no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lubec Historical Society 155 Main St, Lubec, ME 04652.
