Obituary for Leroy "Lee" Edwin Emmerthal
Leroy “Lee” Emmerthal, 90, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2022, at his home in Orange, Connecticut surrounded by family and friends. He was born on April 21st, 1932, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the son of the late Leroy and Caroline (O’Connell) Emmerthal.

On May 4th, 1957, he married the love of his life, Barbara (Prusaczyk) in Bridgeport and together they lovingly raised their family in Stratford, Connecticut.

He served in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1954 reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant.

In 1957, he entered the Connecticut State Police Academy, graduating and starting a distinguished career with the Connecticut State Police in 1958, assigned to Troop G, Westport. He led cases that involved safe crackings, bank robberies, murders and the apprehension of an armed escaped inmate. Over his career, his service was recognized with two Meritorious Citations and Trooper of the Year. He held various roles including Trooper, Detective and Resident State Trooper across a number of barracks and retired in 1989 at the rank of Sergeant.

His strong work ethic cut his retirement short in 1994 when he joined the Fairfield Public School System as their Head of Security, retiring in 2018.

He enjoyed playing golf, gardening, afternoons at Captains Cove and an occasional trip to the casino.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara; his daughter Linda Welch and her husband William “BJ”; his two sons, Leroy “Roy” and his wife Susan (Robertson), and Ronald “Ron” and his wife Denise (Greene); seven grandchildren, David, Meaghan and Matthew Emmerthal, Amanda Welch and her fiance Gregory “Greg” Matthews, Joseph “Joe” Welch and his wife Ashley (Benoit), Christina Emmerthal and Eric Bey; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his paternal grandmother, Grace (Miller) Emmerthal who always held a special place in his heart; his brother Albert and two sisters, June Hornak and Joyce Eaton; and three uncles that he thought of as brothers, Irving, Wilbur and Lawrence Emmerthal.

Services will be conducted in Stratford on Tuesday, July 5th, with visitation hours of 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the William R. McDonald Funeral Home, 2591 Main Street, followed by an 11 a.m. Mass at St. Mark Church, 500 Wigwam Ln, with entombment to follow at St. Michael’s Garden Mausoleum, 2205 Stratford Ave.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the Smilow Cancer Hospital, through their Trumbull Center.

We’d like to thank Connecticut Hospice, ElderCare CT and his primary caretaker, Howie, for the excellent care and quality of life they provided him during the final months of his life.
