Obituary for Marie (Evancko) Underhill
Marie Rita (Evancko) Underhill, age 87 of Stratford, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 27, 2022, after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. She was the beloved wife of the late Eugene E. (Gene) Underhill who preceded her in death in 1983. Marie was born December 29, 1934, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, daughter of the late John and Mary Evanco and had been a long time Stratford resident.
The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Marie. Unselfish is the best adjective to describe Marie. She was a dedicated mother and grandmother first and foremost. She treasured her children. Throughout her life, she was always there helping and caring for others whether it was driving friends to and from bingo or shopping for her neighbors. She was an ardent shopper and had the uncanny ability to always find a deal. Friday night bingos and family weekend trip to Misquamicut State Beach were some of her favorite hobbies. Her pleasant personality, smile and kindness were contagious to everyone she met. She was an ardent sports fan, always watching with her son and rooting for the UConn Huskies, New York Mets and New England Patriots. Marie was a retired quality control inspector for Schick/ Warner Lambert.
She is survived by her daughters, Deborah and Donna; her son Gene, her brother John Evancko, sister Carol Evanco, and several grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Everyone that knew her and loved called her Granny Grans.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial Mass celebrated by Father Nicholas Pavia on Friday, April 1, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. by meeting directly at Our Lady of Peace Church, 651 Stratford Road, Stratford. Entombment with her husband Eugene in St Michael’s Mausoleum will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital www.stjude.org.
