Obituary for Mary Lou Matey
Mary Lou Matey, age 67, beloved loyal companion of Ellen Kamm of Stratford, left this world and joined the angels on January 4, 2016, surrounded by her loving family in Bridgeport Hospital following a very long struggle of poor health. Born in Bridgeport, she was the daughter of the late John Matey and Jean Matey Galya and stepfather Edward Galya.
Mary Lou was raised in Milford, attended Johnathan Law High School and resided in Stratford for the past 18 years. She was a Licensed Drug and Alcohol Counselor, attending the University of Bridgeport where she earned her Certification. She played softball with the Raybestos Brakettes, loved the ocean and beaches of Cape Cod, sports, animals, photography, reading, music and writing. She was Santa to all and loved gatherings with family and friends. As a counselor, she worked at Eagle Hill, St. Mary's Hospital, Griggs House and the Morrissey Foundation. Mary Lou received the George E. Morrissey Award for "Outstanding Service in Alcohol and Drug Counseling" and St. Mary's Hospital "Certificate of Appreciation Award" for her volunteer services.
In addition to Ellen, survivors include a brother, Ed Matey; aunts and uncles, Pauline and Thomas Moycik and Dick and Irene Galya; cousins, Raymond and Rachel Galya, Judy Denofrio, Shelly Carrano, Linda Floroski, Kathleen Beck and her partner-in-crime Lexi; siblings living in the South, cousins, nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews, friends and neighbors. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by many aunts and uncles.
