Obituary for Mary (Sweeney) Schaaf
Schaaf - Mary Sweeney Schaaf, 89, died peacefully at home on The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, October 7, 2013. Mary, the daughter of the late Anthony and Ann Sweeney, was the oldest of ten children. She grew up in Olyphant, Pennsylvania, where she graduated from St. Patrick’s High School. She moved with her family to Stratford in 1942; where she has been a Stratford resident since. In 1944, she married Eugene G. Schaaf following a three month whirlwind courtship. Eugene predeceased her in 2005, after more than 60 years of marriage. Mary was a past president and lifetime member of the ladies auxiliary of the Raymond T. Goldbach VFW Post 9460 in Stratford, where she and Eugene were active for many years. In 1971, Mary fulfilled her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse and worked at Bridgeport Hospital until her retirement. Mary is survived by her children, Barbara and Gary Tessitore of New York City, Mary Ellen and David Calchera of Eastford, CT, Kathy and Steve Cropper of New York City, and Maureen Schaaf of Stratford; by her sisters, Peggy Iacozza, Anne Ulicki and Eileen White (Carl), her brother Michael Sweeney (Nancy), and her sister-in-law Helen Sodoski (Charlie); by her grandchildren Marc and Suzanne Tessitore, Lauren Woods, Amy and Jay Young, Megan Calchera, Amanda and Joe Ghory, Evan Cropper and Nora Cropper; and by her seven great-grandchildren, Jack and Lily Tessitore, Colin and Garret Woods, Caroline and Emma Young, and Phoebe Calchera; and by numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her brothers Eddie, Jimmy, and John, and her sisters Helen and Catherine. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Sanctuary Fund of Our Lady of Peace Church, 230 Park Boulevard, Stratford, CT 06615, where Mary found a true church home and enjoyed the company of the other ladies in the Ivy Leaguers. Donations may also be made to The Stratford VNA, 88 Ryders Lane, Stratford, CT 06614, whose staff lovingly cared for Mary over the last 6 years, or to Connecticut Hospice, Fay Fund, 2 Trap Falls Road Extension, Shelton, CT 06484, in thanks for the tender care by the hospice aides and nurses in the last months of Mary’s life. Friends are invited to attend her funeral service on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at 9:00 a.m. in the William R. McDonald Funeral Home, 2591 Main Street, Stratford, followed by a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, 651 Stratford Road, Stratford, CT. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Friends may call on Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Funeral Home. Mary loved gardening and bridge, but most of all loved her family, who returned that love. She will be greatly missed.
