Obituary for Michael John Piatak
Michael John Piatak, age 67, known to his family and friends as Mike or Mickey, beloved husband of 40 years to Diane (Walsh) Piatak, died unexpectedly on April 4, 2022 in his home in Concord, NC with his wife by his side. Mike was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut on June 13, 1954, son of the late Michael Piatak and Mariana (Tarasovich) Piatak.
At the age of eight, his family moved to Stratford, CT where he resided until 2020, when he moved to Concord to enjoy his retirement and be closer to his children and grandchild.
Mike graduated from Stratford High School in 1973, at which time he joined the United States Navy. Although he requested to be stationed stateside, he spent the majority of his tour in Bahrain, a very small country in Saudi Arabia, and the Philippines. He was proud of his military service.
Mike spent his career working for Sikorsky Aircraft and Helicopter Support Industries known for manufacturing the Black Hawk helicopter. He had many friends during his tenure at those two companies, being known for his infectious personality and over-the-top Halloween costumes.
In his youth, he played baseball and basketball - passing on the love of sports to his children. He pitched for Housatonic Community College’s baseball team and went on to play softball for the Sikorsky Aircraft Traveling A-team. Later, he became an avid golfer, playing as often as possible and getting marginally better over the years. He had a complicated relationship with the game. He was a loyal Dallas Cowboys fan and played darts with his closest friend every Friday night for 30 years.
In addition to his wife Diane, he is survived by his daughter, Emily Piatak, of Concord, NC; his son, Michael M. Piatak and his wife Jaclyn (Schede) Piatak; granddaughter, Natalie, of Charlotte, NC; his brother, John Piatak and his wife Colleen (Hartigan) Piatak; his sister, Mary (Piatak) Watt and her husband Richard Watt, of Stratford and several nieces and nephews including Jennifer and her husband Dick, Elizabeth and her husband Guy, his goddaughter, Meghan, Matt and Kyle and his wife Christilynn, as well as several cousins.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his sister Susan Piatak, all of Stratford.
Friends are invited to attend a Funeral Service celebrated by his brother, Deacon John Piatak on Saturday April 16, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. in the William R. McDonald Funeral Home, 2591 Main St., Stratford.
Interment with military honors will follow in Saint John’s Cemetery, Stratford.
Friends may visit with the family Saturday morning before service time from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home.
