Obituary for Nely Slinko
Nely A. (Stankaitis) Slinko, age 101, of Stratford entered peacefully into eternal life Sunday, May 18, 2014 in the Milford Health and Rehabilitation Center. Nely was born February 12, 1913 in Bridgeport, daughter of the late John and Petronella (Fuerky) Stankaitis and had been a lifetime area resident. After graduating from Central High School in 1931, she went to work for Remington Arms for many years before opening up Slinko’s Bar and Grill in Bridgeport. After closing the bar in the mid sixties, she worked as a medical assistant until her retirement. She was a parishioner of St. Mark’s Church and a member of the Baldwin Center and enjoyed going on their numerous bus trips. She loved working ceramics and shared her love by teaching it out of her home. Many of the beautiful and cherished items she produced could be found displayed in her home. When not working her ceramics, Nely could be found planting and tending her garden where she produced the most beautiful flowers. She was an avid reader and loved westerns, mysteries and romance novels. Survivors include her two sons, Lawrence Slinko and his wife Linda of California and Richard Slinko and his wife Cheryl of Stratford; her eight cherished grandchildren, Lance Slinko and Luke Slinko and his wife Deana all of California, David Slinko of New York, Michael Slinko of Pennsylvania, Emily Slinko of Maryland, Michael Gardella of New York, Cathryn Gardella-Lenart and her husband David Lenart of Derby and Amanda Gardella of Milford; one great-granddaughter, Victoria DePoto and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother John Stankaitis. Her children and grandchildren would like to thank everyone who took care of Nely at the Milford Health and Rehabilitation Center, especially Damaris Ortiz and Marcia Smith. “You gave her such special care and for that we are grateful.” Friends are invited to attend her Memorial Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. by meeting directly at St. Mark’s Church, 500 Wigwam Lane, Stratford. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Mark Building Fund, 500 Wigwam Lane, Stratford, CT 06614.
