Obituary for Olga (Konski) Schmidt
Olga (Konski) Schmidt, age 94, of Clinton, formerly of Stratford, beloved wife of the late Charles Leo Schmidt, passed away peacefully into rest on Wednesday, January 11, 2018 in the Chesterfields Rehab Center, Chester. Mrs. Schmidt was born in Glen White, Pennsylvania, September 13, 1923, daughter of the late Rudolph and Pauline (Zawadski) Konski. Olga was one of five children and her family moved to Bridgeport where she and her siblings, Eddie, Henry, Helen and Mary flourished.
With the onset of WWII, Olga was employed at Auto Ordinance milling parts for the Thompson machine gun. Olga and her sisters participated in the homefront war effort by becoming air raid wardens promoting “lights out” on the streets of Bridgeport. After the war, Olga obtained her LPN license and worked at Halbrooke Hospital in Westport. She later married Charles Leo Schmidt and moved to Stratford. They had two children, Charles “Chip” and Paula “Pinky”.
Olga became involved in the Stratford PAL Rifle Club under the leadership of Detective, Capt. Joseph Carten and became a certified rifle instructor. This prompted her children and cousin Jimmy Carney to join. With a keen talent for marksmanship, they traveled with the PAL Rifle Club competitively and recreationally. Attendance at the National matches in Camp Perry Ohio brought her and her family their fair share of awards.
Olga was a fifteen year dedicated volunteer for the American Red Cross. She was an accomplished X-stitcher and garnered awards at local fairs. She also gifted many friends with her personalized book markers and worked for several years at Memorabilia in Paradise Green.
Recently she moved to Clinton to be close to her daughter, Paula Bove of Killingworth with whom she enjoyed a lifelong friendship. She suffered the loss of her son, Chip in 2007.
Her family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Chesterfields Rehab Center in Chester for their kindness and to Masonicare for their ongoing support.
Friends are invited to attend her funeral service on Monday, January 15, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in the William R. McDonald Funeral Home, 2591 Main St., Stratford.
Interment will be private.
Friends may visit with her family Monday before service time from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
In Lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Pl., Memphis, TN., 38106, https://www.stjude.org/.
