Obituary for Reino John Martikainen
Reino John Martikainen, age 91, of Stratford, beloved husband of the late Shirley (McCabe) Martikainen, died peacefully Tuesday, July 1, 2014 in the Lord Chamberlain Nursing Facility, Stratford. Reino was born July 20, 1922 in Harrison, Maine, son of the late Sylvester and Emma (Heikkinen) Martikainen. Reino graduated from Bridgeton Academy in North Bridgeton, Maine in 1941. He joined the United States Marine Corp in 1943 and proudly served in World War II from 1943 to 1946 as a Staff Sergeant with the Marine Bombing Squadron Six-Thirteen (VMB-613) deployed in the South Pacific on the Island of Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands. He married his soul mate, Shirley McCabe in 1947 and graduated from the University of Maine in 1950 with a Civil Engineering Degree and he and Shirley moved to Stratford, CT in 1952 where they raised their four children. As a Civil Engineer, Reino worked throughout Fairfield and New Haven Counties constructing bridges, roadways, highways, schools as well as banks and apartment buildings. Reino was a devoted husband and father who most enjoyed time spent with his wife and children. They would often be seen on the town tennis courts, at the beach or boating and fishing. Family vacations were taken to Cape Cod and to Maine and New Hampshire to visit family. Reino enjoyed his retirement with Shirley and they traveled extensively to Europe, Canada, South America, the Caribbean Islands, as well as through the Continental U.S. He loved the study of maps and each trip was thoughtfully and precisely planned. Reino took pride in the many accomplishments of his four children as well as those of his 12 grandchildren. He was blessed to meet his first great-grandchild, Eddie Kimball. He is survived by his son John Martikainen and his wife Anne of Trumbull; three daughters, Jean Recklet of Shelton, Becky Martikainen and her husband Tom Watcke of Reading, PA and Karen (Kerry) Driscoll and her husband David of Lordship, CT; two sisters, Dr. A. Helen Martikainen of Chapel Hill, NC and Sylvia Martin of Ft. Myers, FL; one sister-in-law, Priscilla Martikainen of Smithtown, Long Island; twelve grandchildren; one great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved brother and sister, Ernest Martikainen and Irja Bownes. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at 12:00 p.m. in the Stratford United Methodist Church, 2600 Main Street, Stratford.
