Obituary for Robert Mitchell Woods
Robert Mitchell Woods, age 76, of Stratford, lovingly known as Mitch and Poppy, beloved husband of Gail Hamilton Woods entered into eternal rest on November 3, 2014 at the Paradigm Healthcare Center of Prospect. Robert was born on January 15, 1938 in Williams, SC to Leroy and Mary Lois Carter Woods. He celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary with Gail on August 15, 2014. In his early years Savannah, GA was his home. He always recounted stories of the free spirit he shared with his brothers and cousins in their youth. He was enlisted in the United States Army until 1957, was previously married and had two sons. He came to Connecticut when he was 26, met Gail and started a family. He worked at Raybestos Manufacturing and later retired from Ashcroft Industries in 2008. In his healthy years, Robert regularly attended church with his family and decided to join the Roman Catholic faith in 1994 at Saint James Church in Stratford and was proudly baptized and received the sacraments. He will always be remembered for his creativity in fixing everything, humming a country tune, his prankster ways, making everyone laugh and ultimately being a wonderful, courageous man. Robert is survived by his wife Gail, daughters Sara Woods and partner John Cone of  Prospect, Kelli Toro and partner Ed Pinto of Fairfield, and Tammi Ott and husband Daniel of Stratford and son James Prince of Augusta, GA. He is also survived by his grandchildren and great grandchildren, Justin Prince his wife Jennifer and their son Sawyer, Jessica Prince and her sons Jackson and Jacob all from Statesboro, GA, Thomas Prince of Georgia,  Brodey Ott and Caeley Ott of Straftford, and the apple of his eye Joey Toro. He is also survived by his special sister-in-law Michele DiLella along with his daughter-in-law Lisa Prince and many nephews, nieces and cousins in Connecticut, South Carolina and Georgia and especially the family and friends that visited with him in his final months. Robert is predeceased by his dear son Wayne Prince, husband of Lisa and father to Justin and Jessica, who met the Lord on April 4, 2014. In addition to his parents he is predeceased by his siblings Leroy, Leon, Hershall, Charlie and his wife Joan, Rhonda and Barbara Ann, in-laws Michael and Dorothy Rosati and Allan DiLella. The family wishes to thank Stratford Police, Fire and EMS and Yale New Haven and Bridgeport Hospitals for the care they provided in the time Robert needed it most. They also express their deepest thanks to the residents and entire staff of Paradigm of Prospect and most gratefully the nurses and aids in the Yankee and particularly the Heritage wings who became their extended family in the last seven months. Thank you for your care, patience and love. Friends are invited to attend a funeral service on Friday, November 7, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. in the William R. McDonald Funeral Home, 2591 Main St., Stratford, CT followed at 10:30 a.m. by a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial in Saint James Church, Main Street, Stratford.
