Obituary for Shirley A. Orner
Shirley A. (Van Horn) Orner, 87, of Stratford, CT, died Monday, September 8, 2014 at Griffin Hospital in Derby, CT. She was born on April 4, 1927 in Scottdale, PA, the daughter of the late Harold Van Horn and Lenore (Bash) Van Horn. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Robert E. Orner; her sister, Donna Osterwise of Scottdale, PA, and most recently her daughter Diane McCrea-Orner. Shirley and Bob married in their teens and remained passionately in love for their 58 years together. They moved to Stratford in 1956. Shirley worked at City Savings Bank for many years. She loved the Stratford Paradise Green neighborhood where she and her husband raised their children and helped raise (and spoil) their grandchildren. Shirley loved traveling. She loved playing bingo with her friends and the family considered her the queen of slots. She never missed a Steelers football game. As a young girl, she would never miss a new Hollywood movie premier at the local theater. As a result she became a scholar of Hollywood films. She was also a dedicated fan of General Hospital. She was a terrific Mom, Mother-in-Law, Grandmother and friend to many, always leaving whoever she met with a smile on their face. The spoiling of her grandchildren was certainly one of her most enjoyable pastimes. Although Shirley may have lived in CT most of her life she never forgot and always spoke fondly of her youth and all the fun and antics she had with her childhood friends. She also never lost her appreciation for sweets. She had a passion for horses. One of her greatest thrills was when her husband surprised her with one of her own, Jinxy. Family and friends will miss her greatly. She was loved by all. Survivors include her two sons, Todd R. Orner, his wife Jackie, of Oxford; grandchildren, Max and Samantha of Oxford, CT; and her son Dr. Mark R. Orner, his wife Susan, of Orange, CT. Connie Lou and Bob James of New Castle, PA, Eleanor Orner of Youngwood, PA, Sandi Osterwise of Fairport, NY, and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the kind, and compassionate nursing staff at Griffin Hospital who took care of Shirley.
