Obituary for Shirley E. O'Brien
Shirley E. (Burstein) O’Brien, age 91, of Stratford, beloved wife of the late William Frances O’Brien, Sr., passed away Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at home with her family by her side. Mrs. O’Brien was born in Bridgeport September 23, 1922, daughter of the late William and Pauline (Braatz) Burstein and had been a life time area resident. She graduated from Harding High School in 1941 and later graduated from the Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing. She worked at Bridgeport Hospital and also for many years as a private duty nurse, while raising eight children. She enjoyed traveling, especially family vacations in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and playing golf with friends and family members. “Shirl/Grandma O” had a knack for making people laugh and she kept a sharp mind through reading and doing crossword puzzles. She loved to cook and bake for a family who loved to eat her great food. She was a proud lifetime member of the Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association. She married Army Air Corps Sgt. Bill O’Brien in 1945 and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary prior to her husband’s passing in 1996. She was also predeceased by her daughters Judy Sheridan and Kathy Pruzinsky and by her eight sisters and one brother. She is survived by her four sons, Bill O’Brien, Jr. and Patricia A. (Tish) Morrissey; Jim and Ellen O’Brien; Tom and Sue O’Brien and Dan O’Brien, her two daughters, Peg and Ken Isidor and Joan and Steve Law; her son-in-laws Tom Sheridan and Steve Pruzinsky; eighteen grandchildren and (eleven great-grandchildren): Seth & Leonor O’Brien (Isabel & Rachel); Sarah & Paul Gargiulo (Jonathan); Brett O’Brien; Mike & Leeanne Davenport (Brandon & Taylor); Pat Davenport; Lynnea & Chris Mumola (Joe & Chris); Diana & Mike Abata (James); Sue Pruzinsky & Tom Lamb; Julie & Scott Zimov (Jason, Matthew & Hayley); Mason, Clark, Spencer & Audrey Law; Lauren & Kevin O’Brien; Chris O’Brien; Ryan & Tom Sheridan; and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind many friends including Gene and Pat Harkins, Pauline Mallon, Peg Callahan, Jim Butler, Joan Smith & family, Sheila Dolan and family. Family and friends are invited to greet at 10:30 am Saturday, May 31, 2014 by meeting directly at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 1056 Daniels Farm Rd., Trumbull, followed by a funeral service celebrated by Father Reginald Norman at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Shirley's name to the Judith Sheridan Scholarship Fund, 151 Flagler Ave., Stratford, CT 06614 in memory of Judith Sheridan and Kathy Pruzinsky.
