Obituary for Sofia Smirnow
Sofia Skirnewski Smirnow, age 96, of Milford, beloved wife of the late Simon Skirnewski and the late John Smirnow, passed away Sunday, February 19, 2017 in the Westport Health Care Center. Mrs. Smirnow was born on November 2, 1920 in Golovanevsk, Ukraine. Before settling in CT she lived in Austria and Chile. When she came to the U.S. in 1964, she lived in Bridgeport, Stratford, Charlotte (NC), Northport (FL), and returned to the area in 2007. Â
Sofia was a seamstress who retired from the Levine Coat Factory. She enjoyed gardening, reading, knitting, crocheting, sewing, traveling, the opera, concerts, classical music, and spending time with family.Â
Survivors include her daughter Natalia Zamachaj and her husband David of Milford; six grandchildren Ray Rocuant of Cape Nelson, CA, Albert Rocuant and his wife Debbie of Cairo, GA, Richard Rocuant and his wife Sherry of Summerville, MO, Paul Rocuant and his wife Amanda of Fort Myers, FL, Alexander Zamachaj and his wife Jessica of Orange, CT, and Peter Zamachaj and his wife Kelly of Merrimack, NH; her son-in-law Ramiro Rocuant of Santiago, Chile; twenty great grandchildren Tara, Rami, Greg, Tim, Danielle, Andrew, Brian, Nicholas, Michael, Sarah, Samuel, Adam, Hannah, Suzanna, Danielle, Rebecca, Ryan, Raine, Nathaniel, and Madeleine; and three great-great grandchildren, Joslyn, Nina, and Cali. She was predeceased by a daughter Dina Rocuant, her sister Nadia, and her brother Volodia.Â
Friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Father Thomas Lynch on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at Saint James Church, 2070 Main St., Stratford, CT. Interment will follow in Saint John's Cemetery, Stratford.  Friends may visit with her family on Saturday morning from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. before service time in the William R. McDonald Funeral Home, 2591 Main St., Stratford, CT 06615.Â
