Obituary for Susan Dritenbas
Dritenbas, Susan M.Susan M. Dritenbas, age 65, of Shelton, CT (formerly Stratford) passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 20, 2015. Susan was born Sept 24, 1950, in Bridgeport, first child of Arthur C. and Dorothy (Pruzinsky) Dritenbas.
Sue graduated from Bunnell High School in 1968 and Southern CT State University in 1972, with a degree in teaching. She taught physical education in the Stratford school systems for 10 years. Sue spent many summers working for the Stratford Recreation Dept. In the early years as a day camp coordinator at local playgrounds, and in later years she worked at both Short Beach and Flood Jr. High School as a swim instructor and coach. In addition, Sue was the original coach for the Bunnell Girl's Varsity Swim Team for many years in the 1970's. She went on to become a Distribution Manager for the "New York Times".
Sue was an accomplished artisan of many mediums, who especially loved working with wood and stones. In family circles, Sue will be remembered for her outrageously creative ideas and fun activities to enliven our annual 'Nipsky' Family Picnics. A true Free Spirit, who loved animals (especially cats!) and who always looked outside the box, Sue touched the lives of all who knew her. She was loved dearly and will be greatly missed.
In addition to her parents, Sue is survived by two sisters, Karen Essig and her husband Scott of Stratford and Anne Tomatore of Shelton; sister-in-law Janice (Pace) Dritenbas of Torrington; two nephews, James Tomatore and his wife Erica of Stratford and David Essig and his wife Jennifer of Boston, MA; one niece, Diana Jonason and her husband Greg of Monroe; one great-nephew and two great-nieces, Logan and Ella Jonason and Audrey Essig. She was predeceased by two brothers, Mark and Arthur (Butch) Dritenbas.
There will be a celebration of Sue and her life on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 from 3-7pm, with an informal service at 6pm in the William R. McDonald Funeral Home, 2591 Main Street, Stratford, CT 06615. All who knew and loved Sue are invited to come and share their favorite memories and pictures of Sue with family and friends.
