Obituary for William "Mac" McEvoy

William “Mac” McEvoy, age 86, of Bridgeport, beloved husband of Michelle Denise Verrilli McEvoy, passed away Monday, January 15, 2024. He was born November 19, 1937, In Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania, son of the late James and Margaret (Tosh) McEvoy and had been a longtime area resident.


Mac retired from Allied Signal (Avco, Textron Lycoming) and was a union steward for many years.  He bartended at the Windsock where he made many friends. Mac was a proud United States Navy Veteran from September 13, 1955 to November 11, 1958 having served aboard the USS Gearing DD710 and enjoyed sharing navy stories with family, friends and strangers. He also loved to travel with his Navy brothers to their reunions.


He was an avid football fan with the Eagles being his team. He also loved playing football in high school. According to him, he was the fastest player at Hanover High. He never forgot a face, once he met you, he knew you for life. After retirement, his favorite thing was spending time with his grandkids. Mac would shuttle his grandchildren anywhere and everywhere. He enjoyed having the kids with him after school. He also loved trips to the “Corner store” with them for snacks and he never missed a school event.


In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Billy McEvoy, Michele Rutkowski and husband Steve, Joe McEvoy and wife Jean, David McEvoy and wife Colleen, Sharri Curwen and husband Billy, Lenny Prion and wife Jessica, Christine Alequin and husband Milton; grandchildren, Nicky, Bobbijo, Amanda, Billy, Ronnie, Ashley, Sarah, Marc, Mike, James, Matt, Amber, Amanda, Lexi, Tommy, Autumn, Makayla, Hailey and MJ; great-grandchildren, John, Jaden, Aiden, Elizabeth, Cameryn, Harry, Troy, Benjamin, Landon, Maggie, Mikey, Sawyer, Wesley and Mason; sister, Margaret Kravitz; and his Navy, brother, Bill Kennelly. He is also survived by brother and sister-in-law, many nieces and nephews, extended family, and friends as close as family.


He was predeceased by two brothers, Jimmy and John McEvoy; one sister, Ruth Boston and a grandson, Joe McEvoy.


A Celebration of Life for William “Mac” McEvoy will be held Friday April 12, 2024 from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm At the: Port 5 National Association of Naval Veterans, 69 Brewster St., Bridgeport, CT 06605, 203-576-9366


In lieu of flowers donation may be made to any veteran’s organization of your choosing, Mac’s Favorite organization is Wounded Warriors Project.
