Obituary for Ilse (Piepenbring) Plitt
Ilse (Piepenbring) Plitt, age 100, of Stratford, previously of Trumbull, beloved wife of the late Edward Barber & Ellwood Plitt, passed away Sunday, September 5, 2021. Ilse was born February 18, 1921, in Wuppertal, Germany, daughter of the late Erwin and Marie (Zippman) Piepenbring.
Ilse left Germany at 8 years old with her mother landing in Ellis Island, to join her father who came to the U.S. earlier. She learned to speak English, grew up in Bridgeport, & graduated from Harding High. In her youth, she enjoyed swimming & spending many days with her friends at the beach. She was an accomplished roller skater taking part in local competitions. Ilse loved reading books especially pertaining to the Civil War. She loved the movie “Gone with the Wind” & enjoyed watching her favorite classic movies. She was a huge fan of John Wayne, her favorite movies being “The Quiet Man” & “The Searchers”. Ilse had a great sense of humor, loved the holidays, cooking & had a passion for her desserts! Her greatest joy was having a large family & spending time with them. She especially loved visits from her grandchildren & great grandchildren always making each one feel special and unique.
Cherished survivors include her Children, Diane Henderson of Stratford, Edward Barber (Mary Lou) of Cary, NC, Pamela Barnum (Robert) of Milford, and Jamie Watson of Milford; Grandchildren, Cynthia Henderson of Grafton, MA, Shari Henderson of Stratford, Edward Barber (Nora) of Cary, NC, Shawna Barber of Australia, Meaghann Nilsen (Scott) of New Hill, NC, Matthew Barber of Torrington, Robert Barnum (Stephanie) of Trumbull, Gregory Barnum (Morgan) of Milford, Andrew Watson (Eden) of Chelmsford, MA, Elisabeth Mikita (Eric) of Milford, Daniel Watson (Leigh) of Coventry, & Rachel Watson of Milford; Great-Grandchildren, Robert, James, Claire, Maleigh, Adelle, Evelynn, Vivienne, Aurora, Nathan, Hunter, Callie & Piper.
In addition to her husbands, she was predeceased by her son Richard Barber.
Friends & family are invited to attend her memorial service on Saturday, September 11, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. in the Unity Hill United Church of Christ, 364 White Plains Rd, Trumbull, CT.
Friends may visit with the family before the memorial service from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the church.
