Obituary for Rose Joan (Picone) Higgins
Rose J. Higgins, 101, passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at Apple Rehab Shelton Lakes, Shelton. Born June 20, 1912, in Port Chester, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Pasquale “Patsy” and Celestina (Pascucci) Picone and was raised in Stratford, later becoming a longtime Shelton resident. She was the widow of James G. Higgins, to whom she was married for 61 years. Known to her family and friends as “Rosie,” she was a woman ahead of her time, graduating from Stratford High School during the Great Depression, when many of her peers left school for the workforce. For many years, she enjoyed attending high school reunions and several of her classmates became her regular bridge partners. For years, Rosie spent summer days at Stratford’s Short Beach, meeting friends and introducing her grandchildren to the sun and sand. She was also an avid driver and logged thousands of miles behind the wheel on two cross-country trips with her late husband. An outgoing and caring person, Rosie was active in her community, serving as president of the Pine Rock Park Volunteer Fire Co. 4 Ladies Auxiliary and as a member of Stratford’s American Shakespeare Theatre’s Ladies Guild. Rosie treasured spending time with her loved ones, hosting holiday meals in her Pine Rock Park home and, as years passed, watching her family grow to include grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, James G. Higgins Jr., brothers Dominick, Pat, James, and Charles Picone, and sister, Mary Reap. She is survived by her brother, Frank Picone of Hollywood, Fla., daughter, Judy Travers and husband, Wayne, of Antrim, N.H., and daughter-in-law Jane Higgins of Shelton. Additionally, she leaves behind grandchildren Wayne Travers Jr. and wife, Eileen; Amy Wells and husband, Schuyler; Loren Beaudoin and husband, John; Katie Higgins Denecke and husband, Mark; James G. Higgins III and wife, Heather; great-grandchildren Timothy Wells and wife, Erin; Joshua Wells; Gregory Beaudoin; Cecilia Beaudoin; Charlie Denecke; Molly Denecke; Robbie Higgins; and Adelaide Higgins. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, May 12, at 10 a.m. at St. Margaret Mary Roman Catholic Church, 50 Donovan Lane, Shelton. Family and friends may call at the church 30 minutes prior to the service. She will be interred at St. Mary Cemetery in Milford. In lieu of flowers, her family asks that contributions be made to Spooner House, 30 Todd Road, Shelton, CT 06484. (www.actspooner.org).
