Obituary for Elizabeth Cecelia Matulionis
Elizabeth Cecelia Matulionis "Betty", age 94, of Stratford, passed away on Monday, June 27, 2016 at Lord Chamberlain Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Born in Bridgeport on September 13, 1921, she was the only child of Tom and Elizabeth Carr Small. The family moved to Stratford in 1924 where she lived in the same home and raised her family for 90 years. Betty was predeceased by her loving husband, John "Matty" and her two sons, Thomas and John.
Betty graduated from Stratford High School, Class of 1940. After graduation she went to Booth & Bayless Business School and upon graduation was employed at the Bassick Company in Bridgeport. Then, in June of 1943, she enlisted proudly to serve her country as a "Wave" in the United States Navy during World War II. Stationed in Norman, OK and then Pensacola, FL, Betty served as an Aviation Machinist Mate 2nd Class. She so cherished her time in the Navy and lovingly shared her many stories and memories of her time as a Wave working on the aircraft and flying in the planes. Returning home as the war ended in December of 1945, she returned to work at the Bassick Company in the Accounting Department until she and Matty were married in July of 1952. Betty was an Inductee to Women In Military Service, a Charter Member of the Naval Women's Memorial Foundation; a member of Raymond T. Goldbach VFW Post and the Stratford Anderson-Dunn-Kochiss Post 42 American Legion.
Betty was a great friend to many; she loved traveling, visiting friends and family as she and Matty took their "road trips". She loved her Vermont home and all of the special times there with family and great friends both winter and summer. Betty was a wonderful conversationalist and host with great stories and always loved a party! She is survived by several cousins, many nieces and nephews, close friends and by her special friends, William Marx and Marion Schrade who both lovingly assisted in her care for many years.
Friends are invited to attend the Funeral Service on Tuesday, July 5th at 11:00 at the William R. McDonald Funeral Home, 2591 Main Street, Stratford. Interment with Full Military Honors will follow in Union Cemetery, Stratford. Friends may visit with the family Tuesday morning from 10:00 a.m. to service time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Betty's proud honor to Women In Military Service For America Memorial Foundation, Dept. 560, Washington, DC 20042-0560 or www.womensmemorial.org.
