Obituary for Bertha (Horvath) Wargo
Bertha (Horvath) Wargo, age 95, of Stratford and previously of the Black Rock section of Bridgeport, beloved wife of the late Stephen F. Wargo, passed away Friday, February 19, 2016 in Stratford. Bertha was born November 12, 1920 in Bridgeport, youngest of Joseph and Anne (Blanar) Horvath's eight children.
She attended Franklin School in Stratford and graduated from Stratford High School, Class of 1939 and was as known as "Best Artist". She married Stephen in 1940 and settled in the Saint Mary's by the Sea section of Black Rock where they raised their two wonderful children and lived a wonderful life with her best friend until he passed in 2002 after 63 years together.
Bertha attended the First United Church of Christ where she sang in the Choir for twenty years. She was a past secretary and president of the church's Women's Guild. She always enjoyed and used her artistic talents when decorating the church hall and Ritz Ballroom for their many festivals and fashion shows.
She was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was past Matron of Orient Chapter #1 Order of the Eastern Star and a grand officer of the Eastern Star.
She loved to sew and was always making or designing bridal gowns, communion dresses, and other dancing school and theater costumes.
Survivors include her two children, Roberta (Wargo) Sammis of Stratford with whom she resided and Francis Wargo and his wife Dorothy of Stratford; five grandchildren, Marcus Wargo, Vanessa Masik, Desiree Anderson, Merril Brian Sammis Jr and Daria Sentocnik; three great-grandchildren, Galen, Tyler and Vid Joseph and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her three brothers and four sisters.
Her family would like to thank Caring Hospice for their kind and compassionate care.
Friends are invited to attend her funeral service officiated by the Revered Edward Rawls on Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the William R. McDonald Funeral Home, 2591 Main St. Stratford, CT. Entombment will follow in the Mt. Grove Pilgrimage Mausoleum, Bridgeport. Friends are invited to visit with her family on Monday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 pm. in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Bertha's memory be made to the St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
