Obituary for Consiglia "Celia" Barberia
Consiglia “Celia” (Volpe) Barberia, age 91, of Stratford, beloved wife for over 50 years of the late Thomas Barberia passed away, Sunday, January 25, 2015 in Bridgeport Hospital. Celia was born March 27, 1923 in Introdacqua, Italy, daughter of the late Thomas and Elisa Volpe. She moved from Italy in 1948 and lived in Bridgeport before settling in Stratford in 1957. She was a retired master seamstress and made many of her own clothes as well as for her family and friends. Celia loved to entertain and, along with her daughter Josephine, loved to cook and bake. A meal at their house was always a feast. They made their own sauce with tomatoes grown from their garden. She adored her great-grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them. She is survived by her daughter Josephine Cristini and her husband Orlando of Stratford with whom she resided; two grandchildren, Lisa Cristini of Stratford and Cynthia Thomas and her husband Lawrence of Beacon Falls; three adored great-grandchildren, Brenna, Isabella and Olivia Thomas, all of Beacon Falls; one brother, Paul of Stratford; three sisters, Gina of Florida and Maria and Gilda of Italy; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a grandchild, Patricia Cristini; two brothers, Tomassino and Luigi and two sisters, Philomena and Lillian. Friends are invited to attend her funeral service on Friday, January 30, 2015 at 9:30 a.m. in the William R. McDonald Funeral Home, 2591 Main St, Stratford followed by a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in St. James Church, Stratford. Interment will follow in St. John's Cemetery, Stratford. Friends may visit with the family Thursday evening from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the American Heart Association, 5 Brookside Drive, Wallingford, CT 06492.
