Obituary for Genevieve "Giovanna" Williams
Genevieve “Giovanna” (Canganelly) Williams, age 88, of Stratford, previously of Shelton and Fort Myers, Florida, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2017. She was the beloved wife of the late Leonard Gardner “Gard” Williams. Gen was born in Shelton, daughter of the late James and Susie Papale Canganelly.
The fifth of seven children, Gen was raised during the Great Depression, a time when men would come up from the tracks behind the Canganelly home and know they could always get a warm meal. Summers were spent at grandparents’ homes - a working farm in the Sunnyside section of Shelton or a home just below Camptown in Derby. Other time was spent working in the family Legion restaurant on Center Street and enjoying Savin Rock and the circus. She graduated St. Joseph Grammar School and Shelton High School (Class of 1947), then worked at the Chromium Process, marrying Gard and continuing work while he served our country in Korea. The next decade was spent raising a family and being active in the St. Joseph Mothers’ Club. Returning to work at Burndy Corp. and Miles Laboratories, Gen retired as a laboratory technician for Bayer Pharmaceutical, making many friends there. She enjoyed cooking, warm weather, shopping and, most of all, family. In 1995, Gen moved to Fort Myers and thoroughly enjoyed the life of a Floridian, the Garden Club and card games with her ladies.
Gen is survived by her son Richard and his wife Lynda (with whom she resided), granddaughter Meghann Ralabate and her husband Matthias, grandson Brendan Williams and three great-grandchildren. She also leaves a brother-in-law Gerald (Marge) Williams and 49 nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews and great grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was predeceased by her six siblings and their spouses, Joseph (Ann) Canganelly, Ann (Lino) Constantino, Helen (Vincent) Capece, Assunta (Frederick) Rak, Margaret (Anthony) Della Monica and Vincent Canganelly, and two nephews.
A memorial mass will be held on Friday, October 13, 2017 at 10:45 a.m. at Our Lady of Peach Church, Stratford Road, Lordship, CT. Interment will be private. Donations in the memory of Genevieve Williams may be made to the Our Lady of Peace Sanctuary Fund, 10 Ivy St., Stratford, CT 06615.
