KNAPP - Irene (Szeman) Knapp, age 90 of Stratford, beloved wife of the late Stephen Knapp entered eternal life Friday, November 28, 2014 in Saint Raphael’s Hospital, New Haven. Mrs. Knapp was born February 29, 1924 in Bridgeport, daughter of the late Stephen and Julia (Fedor) Szeman and had been a lifetime area resident. She graduated from Bassick High School, Bridgeport and received her Associates Degree in music from Housatonic College. Irene met her husband on the roller skating circuit where they were both accomplished skaters. Irene’s mother was well known for the skating outfits she made for Irene. She was known by many as the organist at Our Lady of Peace Church in Stratford. She also assisted as the organist at St Charles Church. Irene, along with her husband and daughter owned and operated the Farmers Snappers Vegetable and Garden Center on South Main Street, Stratford, where they sold flowers and produce grown on their farm. Irene was also an avid antique collector and dealer in Connecticut and operated a booth in the Stratford antique Center. Survivors include her daughter, Kathleen (Knapp) Hiten, known to the Knapp side of the family as Kathy Lou of Milford and several nieces and nephews, especially Mimi and Jay who visited Irene often. She was predeceased by two brothers and a sister, Steve and Robert Szeman and Barbara Johnson. Irene was especially close to her brother Steve, whom she nursed through his bout of cancer and who was known locally as the owner of the “Hurricane,” a fishing party boat out of Bridgeport.
