Obituary for John "Jack" O'Toole
John (Jack) O’Toole, age 90, of Shelton passed away peacefully at the Bishop Wicke Health Care Center due to recently diagnosed ALS. John was born in Elmhurst Queens, New York, son of the late Michael and Mary (Sharkey) O’Toole. He was a longtime resident of Ansonia before residing in Stratford for the last 16 years and most recently Wesley Heights in Shelton. John was a communicant of St James Parish in Stratford. John leaves behind his loving companion of 16 years Maryann Kubilus. John was predeceased by his beloved wife of 49 years, Adrienne (Santory) O’Toole, his parents and brother Martin F. O’Toole.

After a few short years working for Fairchild Corp in Long Island John moved to CT to work for Sikorsky Aircraft as a machinist and foreman from which he retired after 38 years in 1993. During that time, he also worked various family business ventures of the Card ‘n’ Candy Gift shop of Ansonia and catering/deli businesses over a long stretch of years.

John lived a very active life with daily lap swimming at the YMCA, bike riding, camping throughout the country in many of our national parks and square dancing. He carried that forward throughout his long retirement. He biked nearly every paved bike trail throughout CT, NY and MA and most many times over. At age 87 he completed his last 30-mile bike ride and at 88 completed his last half-mile swim at the Y. That still did not stop him from persevering with his stationary bike daily and walking at his beloved Short Beach in Stratford and the Derby Greenway Trail. John enjoyed square dancing throughout his adult life and continued it through retirement with the Shelton seniors for many years.

If there was anything that he enjoyed even more than the great outdoors and exercise was his family, particularly the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, both his own and those of his extended family with his longtime companion Maryann.

John will be remembered the most for his love and wit that he extended to everyone he encountered. Always a hello, whether he knew you or not, always a smile and many kind words to follow. He cherished every moment with others and stressed the importance of living in the present and living every day like it was your first (not your last), for that is where true happiness would be for all of us.

Our family and loved ones would like to extend our deepest appreciation of the entire staff of both Wesley Heights and Bishop Wicke Health Center for their remarkable compassionate care to John and the support they provided to all of us. John had often expressed his deep gratitude for his caregivers and support staff, especially those that tended to his immediate everyday needs, care and therapeutic support. A special thank you to, in his words his “guardian angel” Marcia.

His beloved family includes his children: son’s John O’Toole Jr., wife Jacquelyn, Michael O’Toole wife Nicolette (Nickie) and daughter Colleen M Wesolowski, husband William; grandchildren: John O’Toole III wife Laura, James O’Toole wife Casey Oster of North Carolina, Joseph O’Toole, Meghan Delsole, husband Christopher, Patrick O’Toole, wife Sarah Kurisu of Vermont, Kierstin Wesolowski, husband Bryan Marazzi, great-grandchildren, Matthew Delsole, Luke Delsole, Natalie Delsole, Harper O’Toole, Clara Marazzi, Shaelin Marazzi, Lainey Grace O’Toole and another baby due any day now.

His beloved extended family includes Maryann Kubilus’ children: daughter Victoria Warner, son’s John Kubilus, wife Karen, Frank Kubilus, partner Brad Gimbutis, grandchildren: Kerri Urbanowicz husband Paul, Josh Warner, Joey Warner, John Kubilus, Jordan Kubilus and Evan Kubilus, great grandchildren: Jack Urbanowicz, Ryan Urbanowicz and Sara Urbanowicz.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, November 15, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. in Saint James Roman Catholic Church, 2070 Main St., Stratford. Interment will follow at Mount St. Peter’s Cemetery, Derby.
