Obituary for Shirley Martikainen
Shirley Martikainen, age 89, beloved wife of Reino Martikainen, died peacefully at Lord Chamberlain on December 30, 2013. Shirley was born February 2, 1924 in Waterville, Maine. She was a graduate of Windham High School and she then received an RN diploma from Maine General Hospital. Shirley and Reino married in 1947 and Shirley worked at Bangor General Hospital while Reino attended college. They moved to Stratford, CT in 1951 where Shirley was a devoted mother, raising her 4 beloved children. As a homemaker, Shirley was involved in her children’s many activities and volunteered extensively in her community. After Reino retired, Shirley and Reino enjoyed many memorable trips to Europe, Canada, South America, the Caribbean Islands, as well as through the Continental U.S. Shirley's most cherished time was spent with her family. She took pride in the many accomplishments of her children as well as those of her 12 grandchildren. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. In addition to her husband of 66 years Reino Martikainen of Stratford, she is survived by her son John Martikainen and his wife Anne of Trumbull, her daughter Jean Recklet of Shelton, her daughter Becky Martikainen and her husband Tom Watke of Reading, PA and her daughter Kerry and her husband David Driscoll of Lordship, CT. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and she was recently blessed with her first great grandchild, Eddie. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 12:00 p.m. in the Stratford United Methodist Church, 2600 Main Street Stratford. The family would like to thank the staff of the second floor of Lord Chamberlain for their love, care and compassion for Shirley.
